Properties With Black Mold Contamination Require Immediate Containment

Black mold contamination is being reported in more Percy Priest, TN, homes than ever before. Mold damage can be quite severe if the issue is left unchecked, and ignoring it usually means you’re also ignoring the cause. Homes that have a severe infestation usually require some degree of containment as part of the mitigation process.

What Is Black Mold?

Actually, it comes in three standard colors:

  • Black
  • Green
  • Yellow

It tends to be a little shiny, and it’s always found on porous substances, such as drywall and wood. If you see some mildew growing on tiles or grout in bathrooms, that’s typically indicative of a temporary excess of moisture, whereas colonies growing on wood or gypsum are due to a serious, ongoing issue.

What Causes Mold Contamination?

Indoor humidity needs to be maintained at 30 – 50% to create ideal conditions for both human comfort and building materials. A brief excursion of humidity is harmless, but when it remains above 50%, it means something abnormal is happening that can lead to water and mold damage.
If the cause is hidden, the damage often will remain so, too, until it’s shockingly expansive. Hidden pinhole leaks in water lines, roof leaks and septic line leaks are all potential causes of explosive black mold growth.

What Is Containment?

It sounds much more serious than it is. The purpose of containing an area is to prevent the mold from spreading. This can save an enormous amount of money in the mold restoration process. Negative airflow is applied to the infected area until the mold can be removed.

What Happens Once It’s Contained?

Mold remediation experts have commercial mold restoration techniques that can save personal property and eliminate mold. After the containment, they’ll locate what’s causing mold growth and fix that, as well.
Next, they attack the mold with custom disinfectants that starve mold colonies and break down their cell walls. By applying super-dried air and a consistent negative pressure environment, they kill the remaining colonies and inhibit further growth.
When all the mold contamination has been cleaned up, your home will look (and smell) just like it did before the problem. Containment is an important part of the process.
